Our commercial cows began from a cross-bred, mainly dairy mix of cows Stephan was grazing on the farm in 1995. They had no particular merit, other than that they were here. Early in 1996 we tagged and began weighing all the cattle, monitoring the growth-rates of the calves which were born that year (the result of matings with a stray bull) and on that basis began to cull the cattle which were the poorest producers. Albert, a supposedly purebred Angus bull (apparently carrying the recessive red colour gene), sired his first calves, born in 1998. In 1999 the first AB (Artificial Breeding/Insemination) calves were born, and in 2000 the first calves of our first Virago Stud pedigree bull, Bertand 01, arrived. There have been some very strong cow families, like that of #82, a scrawny old Jersey cow which produced high-production heifers which, with careful bull selection, bred cattle with astonishingly good physical conformation, considering their maternal pedigree! #43, a lovely old brown cow with distinctive white stripes down one side, turned out to be an even stronger matriarchal figure in the herd. The cows of that family still have a little too much milk, but their calves also flesh out extremely well when finished for the beef market. That family also carries a dominant colour dilution gene which produces grey coat colour when it is present. Some of the commercial cows now rival the Pedigree cattle in calf growth-rates and general production.
